Fasting during Chaitra Navratri

The nine-day festival of Chaitra Navratri will begin on the 6th of April and go on all the way to the 14th of April. Marking the beginning of Spring, the festival is also called Vasant Navratri.

Celebrated to worship Goddess Durga this festival is celebrated with much enthusiasm in Gujarati, Bengali and Maharashtrian communities.

Like Sharad Navratri, later during the year, many people fast during this period as well. However, there are some rules to fasting and restrictions to follow.

Let us look at some of the do’s and don’ts for Chaitra Navratri.

Do’s for Chaitra Navratri:

  • You should take bath before 9 am.
  • Red colour is Goddess Durga’s favourite colour, hence the during Navratri fasteners should use the red colour cloth, flower and garments.
  • Eat one meal of fast-friendly food during the day.
  • Offer homemade bhog to the Gods every day.

Don’ts for Chaitra Navratri:

  • Do not cut your nails till Ekadashi
  • You should also not cut your hair during the days of Chaitra Navratri.
  • Do not indulge in alcohol and non-vegetarian foods.
  • Do not stitch or knit anything during the period.

Food to eat:

Grains and Flour: When fasting you make rotis from Kuttu ka atta (Buckwheat flour), Singhade ka atta (Water Chestnut flour) andRajgira ka atta (Amarnath flour), or khichdi from Sama ke chawal (Barnyard Millet) and Sama ka atta (flour) and Sabudana (Tapioca Pearls).

Fruits: There are no restrictions when it comes to eating fruits. You can eat them as a smoothie or a whole fruit.

Vegetables: When fasting the only vegetables, you can eat are potatoes, yam, raw banana, raw papaya, lauki and pumpkin.

Dry fruits: To keep your hunger pangs at bay, remember to keep some nuts and dry fruits handy for a midday snack.

Spices: Sendhanamak, jeera and jeera powder (cumin seeds and powder), kali mirch (black pepper powder), chhotielaichi (green cardamom) are the only used spices during fasting.

Food to Avoid:

  • Non-vegetarian food is a strict no during this period.
  • Grains and flours like wheat, rice, chickpea flour (besan), refined flour (maida), semolina (sooji), corn flour, millets like ragi in any form are strictly prohibited to use in cooking.
  • All food should be prepared without onion and garlic. Vegetables like eggplants (baingan), okra (bhindi) and other greens are not consumed.
  • No legumes and pulses are allowed during this period.
  • Table salt, turmeric, garam masala, curry powder, coriander powder, mustard seeds and hing should not be used in cooking.

You need to steer clear from alcoholic and aerated drinks.
